Dr. Khairul Islam, Executive Director of Deep Eye Care Foundation was selected as a 2016 ”Eye Health Hero” by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) for the first time from Bangladesh. Our reputations and endeavors in the field of eye care sectors highly recognized and appreciated by achieving this world famous award by him.
Dr. Khairul Islam, was started his activities on Eye Health in small scale in the least developed and underserved area of Rangpur District, to serve the poor community. Continuation of that process to meet the local need, in the year 2008 he started “Deep Eye Care Foundation”, in large scale. Depends on his perfect leadership, dedication, hardworking, within only eight years this organization can able to deliver high quality eye care services to the large community of this region at their door steps and achieve their internal faith, through outstanding development. During this short period of time Deep Eye Care Foundation provides satisfactory eye care services to almost 7 Lac people directly through their outdoor and several programs, restoring the vision of 50 thousand people by successful cataract surgeries and save them from ultimate blindness, for the first time operated 600 pediatric cataracts in this region and help to build their bright future, successfully operated almost 7 thousand other ocular surgeries and help the community to recover their miseries. In addition through several eye care examinations with ultra-modern instruments, they provide a big support to the community to recover their visual impairment and low vision. They also organized thousands of Patient Screening Programs for the poor community in the remote area of this region to ensure them quality eye health.
Deep Eye Care Foundation plays a very important role to built-up public 
awareness about eye health in this region. Every year it organizes several workshops, seminars with the people of different classes and professions, including students and teachers to enhance the public awareness about eye health. Thus, Dr Khairul’s efforts encouraged others to establish eye care centers and as a result the region’s cataract surgical rate (CSR) has increased to 2,000 from only 200 in the year 2000.
International Eye Health Organization ORBIS International provides a great support from every corner and always with Dr. Khairul, from the very beginning of his great endeavor. In addition several other international Eye Health Organizations like – GLENCO, RENGCO, Islamic Relief, Rotary Club, BRAC and other NGOs, including local people, provide him a big support to keep-up this organization at international level.
To ensure high quality Eye Care Services, according to the time and demand of the people of least developed area of Bangladesh, Dr. Khairul has been taken an excellent courageous initiative. Depend on his activities, ORBIS International nominated him as “Eye Health Hero-2016”. After considering all the parameters, the members of IAPB finally selected Dr. Khairul Islam as “Eye Health Hero-2016”. It brings a great honour to our nation. This glorious Global recognition of his activities, also boost-up other eye health professionals and new comers.
IAPB brings together governments and non-governmental agencies with the goal of eliminating avoidable blindness and vision impairment. IAPB’s Vision Atlas compiles the latest, definitive research on global eye health to inform this effort.
