Comprehensive Eye care services for the Char Population – first ever in Bangladesh through “Char Vision” Project (2008-2012) supported by ORBIS International, Bangladesh.

Project Goal :

To consolidate and flourish the capacity of Deep Eye Care Foundation to make low cost quality eye care services accessible to the Char population and the surrounding rural and underserved urban population of Rangpur and Gaibandha Districts.

Bangladesh has high prevalence of blindness. The blindness prevalence is also high among the children which is 0.75/1,000 children according to the WHO global estimate. Available demographic data show that there are about 67 million children living in Bangladesh. Approximately 1.5 million children have refractive errors and 51,200 are blind, of which about 20,480 are due to avoidable causes (Bangladesh Childhood Blindness Study 2002). Additionally, around 153,600 children have low vision problem, of which about 78,336 cases are avoidable. These children are deprived of basic eye care services, and hence are likely to negatively impact on the national economy of Bangladesh. In order to prevent the avoidable childhood blindness ORBIS started this project in 2012.

Goal:

To increase access to quality eye care service for the children of Greater Rangpur region to prevent and reduce childhood blindness.
Objectives:

Developing Infrastructure.
Developing human resource in pediatric eye care.
Doing outreach programs, treatment and surgeries
Raising standards & ensuring quality clinical service for the children
Establishing referral network

NATIONAL CHILDHOOD BLINDNESS PROJECT (NCBP)

Supported by: Orbis International, Bangladesh

Project Period: April 01, 2017 to 31 December 2019

Quarter: 1^st– 4^th (Jan – Dec, 2018)

Outreach Program: During last one year January, 2018 – December, 2018 DECF organized total 52 School Sight Testing Programs in different schools within Rangpur District for screening children. Total 39913 students were screened in SSTP. In the screening camps, we identified refractive errors and prescribed medicine. We delivered 767 free spectacles among the refractive poor patients. We provided few drugs to the poor patients under this project. We referred 78 students with operational and critical cases to the Base Hospital. In this quarter several pediatric cataract surgeries also done through SSTP.

Pediatric Outdoor Service: Total 18707 patients visited pediatric outdoor of DECF from January, 2018 – December, 2018, for receiving treatment. This number showed increasing trend. Trained teachers, health workers and little doctors are played a very important roll to increase pediatric patients in outdoor of DECF.

Eye Surgery Performance: Total 367 Pediatric surgeries were done from January, 2018 – December, 2018. Out of them 217 (59%) were male and 150 (41%) were female patients. Among them cataract surgeries were 110 (30%) and 12 (3.2%) squint surgeries were done. During this quarter only 17 (5%) patients were operated free of cost, 158 (43%) patients at subsidized cost and 192 (52%) patients with their own cost. Operated patients ware very satisfied to have their good vision after surgery. It is very significant that paid surgeries are increased day by day. This quarter male surgery patients were almost double than female. Cataract surgeries were also done more than previous quarter.

Free Cataract Surgeries for 3000 poor cataract patients.

Free Spectacles distribution for 12000 visually impaired poor people.

DECF and ISLAMIC RELIEF, a UK based registered International NGO, take up program named Eye Rehabilitation Project (ERP) to provide cataract surgery facility for distress patients of greater Rangpur Region. Islamic Relief expresses hope that this program will continue and expand in future.

From May, 2010 to Dec 2013 :

Total Cataract Surgery done: 2673

International. Under this program Primary eye treatment is provided to 13500 poor patients and cataract operations with IOL implantation are done on 1137 patients and others operations done on 353 patients in the northern part of Bangladesh  from Feb, 2011 to September, 2013. TLMB expresses hope that this program will continue and expand in the future.

From Feb, 2011 to Sept, 2013:

Cataract Surgery Done: 1137

Other Operations Done: 353

Rotary Club of Rangpur Central has been working to reduce the cataract blindness since it’s inception. The club members always give priority to this issue and every year it performs 300 cataract surgeries. Meanwhile Rotary club of Rangpur Central has become one of the renowned charitable eye care service providing organizations within and without the district.

PFE Project:

After successful completion of “Free Cataract Surgeries” project 2017-2018, supported by Partners for Equity (PFE), Deep Eye Care Foundation has started another “Free Cataract Surgeries” project with them in a larger scale to deliver free Cataract, Pterygium and DCT surgeries in context of local demand.

Overall Objectives:

To provide free eye restoration surgery for 9,200 poor patients who cannot afford to pay for eyesight restoration surgery in and around the region of Rangpur district, Bangladesh.

Project Goals:

1. To provide free cataract surgery, pterygium and lacrimal sac (DCT) surgery to poor people in the region of the Rangpur district.
2. To create a significant dent in the national cataract surgical rate (CSR) in the region of Rangpur district and to ultimately increase update of cataract surgery in the region.
